Key Findings
Research published in the journal Bioengineering highlights the technical advantages of Graphy’s direct 3D-printed shape memory aligners. The study indicates that the TC-85 material achieves a shape recovery rate of approximately 96% after 60 minutes in a 37°C environment, simulating human body temperature. In contrast, PETG, a conventional thermoplastic material, showed no shape recovery characteristics under the same conditions.
Technical Details
The narrative review, titled “Direct 3D-Printed Clear Aligners: Materials, Biomechanics, and Clinical Application,” analyzed the material properties and biomechanical performance of Tera Harz TC-85 and TA-28. Mechanical stability tests revealed that after 50 cycles of repeated loading, the deformation resistance reduction rate for TC-85 was 0.4%. This is significantly lower than the reduction rates observed in CA Pro (26.3%) and Invisalign materials (42.1%).
Clinical efficacy was evaluated through a retrospective study of 54 patients. The results showed that the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) score, a metric for malocclusion, improved from an average of 17.01 points to 2.25 points, representing an improvement rate of 86.6%.
Background & Context
The research was conducted by a team including Soo Jin Kim, Tanveer Ahmed Khan, and Mohamed Bayome. The findings were published on October 22 in a Special Issue titled “Advanced 3D-Printed Biomaterials in dentistry.” The study compares direct 3D printing against traditional thermoforming methods, focusing on how shape memory materials can optimize the orthodontic process.
Significance & Outlook
The integration of shape memory materials with direct 3D printing allows for precise design of aligner thickness and structure while eliminating the need for physical tooth models required in thermoforming. While the current data supports clinical viability, the researchers noted that further studies are required to determine long-term clinical effects and superiority over existing methods. Graphy intends to use these scientific foundations to expand its global distribution networks and strengthen its position in the digital orthodontic market.
