Key Findings
Power to Hydrogen (P2H2) has initiated commercial operation of a 500-kilowatt (kW) green hydrogen production system at the NextGen district within the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium. This landmark system, constructed from two 250kW AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) stacks, represents the world’s first commercial deployment of AEM stacks of this specific size, signifying a major leap in electrolyzer technology.
Technical / Clinical Details
The 500kW system deployed by P2H2 leverages cutting-edge AEM electrolysis technology. AEM electrolyzers combine the benefits of PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) and alkaline electrolyzers, offering high efficiency, lower capital costs, and enhanced durability. The individual 250kW AEM stacks within this system are particularly notable as they are the first of their scale to operate in a commercial setting, marking a significant milestone in the technology’s maturity. The facility is capable of producing up to 70 tons of green hydrogen annually, primarily designated for regional customers. Furthermore, the projected levelized cost of hydrogen production is approximately €3.86 per kilogram, which represents a significant 16% cost reduction compared to current benchmark electrolyzer technologies, enhancing green hydrogen’s economic viability.
Background & Context
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges stands as a pivotal chemical and energy hub in Europe, playing a crucial role in advancing decarbonization and the transition to sustainable energy. The NextGen district is specifically designated to foster circular economy initiatives and clean energy projects. Green hydrogen is central to the port’s decarbonization strategy, offering a versatile alternative to fossil fuels across various sectors, including industrial processes, transport, and energy storage. P2H2’s commencement of commercial production is a critical accelerator for the development of the regional green hydrogen ecosystem.
Strategic Significance & Outlook
The commercial operation of the 500kW green hydrogen production system at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges clearly demonstrates the viability of AEM electrolysis technology for large-scale, cost-effective green hydrogen production. The approximately 16% cost reduction is a crucial factor in enhancing green hydrogen’s economic competitiveness and will significantly drive its adoption across industries. This successful case study is expected to stimulate further scale-up of AEM technology and its deployment in other port environments and industrial clusters globally. P2H2’s initiative represents a substantial step towards achieving Europe’s energy transition targets and forging a more sustainable future.
